Beloved. Today, we are going to explore a profound and pivotal truth in the Christian faith: the concept of being "born again." If you’ve ever read or heard the words of Jesus, you’re probably familiar with the phrase. But what does it really mean to be born again? It is not just a metaphor, a spiritual concept. To be born-again means something deeper Jesus is telling us.
The command that says you must be born-again is not new. In fact, it’s one that even Nicodemus, a respected religious leader in his time admitted he did not understand what Jesus was talking about.When Jesus speaks of being "born again," He’s not talking about a physical rebirth. We all know that the process of being physically born is a one-time event, something we cannot replicate. However, Jesus is pointing to a deeper, spiritual transformation—one that takes place in the heart and soul of a person who encounters God.
In verse 6, Jesus says, "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit." This is the crux of the new birth. Flesh can only produce flesh; it’s limited to our human nature, our natural desires, and our sinful inclinations. But the Spirit—the Holy Spirit—gives birth to something entirely new within us: a new nature, a new identity, and a new purpose.
Being born again means experiencing a profound shift from living according to the flesh (our earthly desires and self-centered ways) to living according to the Spirit (God's will and God's purposes). It’s not about trying harder to be good or following rules. It’s about being transformed from the inside out.
Nicodemus was confused, as many of us might be. After all, how can someone be born again—especially when they’re already grown?The term born-again comes directly from Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus in John 3. Nicodemus, a respected Jewish leader, came to Jesus by night to ask about His teachings. Jesus told him plainly:“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3 KJV) Nicodemus was asking how a person could be born again after growing old?
Jesus explained that He was not speaking of a physical birth, but a spiritual birth: That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” (John 3:6 KJV) Being born again means the spirit that was once dead in sin, is made alive by the power of God’s Holy Spirit. It is a new beginning, a total change of heart that only God can bring.
A born-again person, Loves God and His Word. Desires to live righteously. Feels conviction over sin. Shows love and forgiveness toward others. Grows in faith and spiritual maturity. Being Born again means surrendering a sinner's life
Surrender begins when you recognize that your strength, wisdom, willpower, and ways of doing things are not enough. It is the release of pride, excuses, and self-reliant that opens the heart so God can take His rightful place in your life. Acknowledging Your Need for having a relationship with God It is admitting, “Lord, I cannot save myself. I need Your mercy.” This is not shame it is spiritual honesty. Every true transformation starts with confession and humility. “A broken and a contrite heart… Thou wilt not despise.” Psalm 51:17
Turning Away from living the Sinner's Life Surrender includes repentance not just sorrow, but a change of direction. It means releasing old patterns, habits, and bonds that keep you spiritually stuck. This is the moment the chains fall off.
Receiving God’s Grace and Forgiveness When a sinner surrenders, God does not expose them He embraces them. He wipes the slate clean. He restores dignity, identity, and purpose. “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow.” Isaiah 1:18
Allowing God to Lead From This Day Forward Surrender is not just what you leave behind it is who you follow. It means giving God control, saying: “Lord, have Your way in my life.” This leads to becoming transformed, learning obedience, and starting a new walk in the Holy Spirit.
In Simple Words: To surrender a sinner’s life means… Laying down your old life Letting go of self Trusting God with everything Turning from sin
Receiving His mercy And allowing Him to make you new
The Necessity of the New Birth Why is being born again necessary? Jesus makes it clear in verse 3: "No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." Without this spiritual rebirth, we cannot fully enter into the life God has for us. We cannot experience the fullness of His kingdom here on earth or in eternity.
Without the new birth, we remain spiritually dead in trespasses and sin, cut off from the life of God. It’s like trying to live without a heartbeat: our natural bodies may continue for a time, but our spirits are lifeless. But when we are born of the Spirit, we are brought to life in a way that nothing else can compare to.
Being born again is not just an event that happened long ago in your life; it’s a continual process. Each day, the Spirit works in us, shaping us, molding us into the image of Christ. If you have not yet experienced this new birth, today is the day to invite Jesus into your heart. If you are already born again, remember that this new life is a gift, not something to take for granted. Let us live as those who have been made new, walking in the power of the Spirit and sharing the hope of the gospel with a world that desperately needs it.
